The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on North Korea at its New York headquarters at 3 p.m. local time, the Ethiopian mission to the UN said Friday. The mission, which is holding the Council’s rotating presidency this month, said the consultations would take place behind closed doors at the initiative of the United States, Japan and South Korea. North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile in the early hours of Friday in violation of UNSC resolutions that bar it from researching ballistic missile technology. The projectile flew over northern Japan before splashing into the Pacific, according to the US Department of Defense. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said Friday he spoke with US State Secretary Rex Tillerson by phone overnight about North Korea’s latest missile launch.”We have discussed the situation with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. We have called an urgent UN Security Council meeting that will take place at 3 p.m. local time [in New York]," Kono said. The Japanese minister told reporters they had agreed that the international community must pile pressure on the North after it "recklessly" conducted a missile test in defiance of UN resolutions that bar it from researching ballistic missile technology.
